About Bruce R Troen

Dr. Bruce Troen is a physician-scientist formally trained in both geriatrics and molecular biology.

His goal is to develop and implement programs to enhance functional capacity (both physical and cognitive) as we age in order to improve quality of life for older adults. He is active as a clinician on the inpatient geriatrics consult service and as an educator for physicians in training and the community. He heads a team of researchers who focus on resilience, frailty, longevity/aging mechanisms, and osteoporosis – all of which result in great morbidity in older adults. Most recently, these researchers have been investigating resilience in both preclinical and clinical models to delineate the impacts of exercise and nutritional supplements on physical and cognitive function and the associated biological underpinnings, including epigenetics and metabolism.

Dr. Troen is a fellow of the American Geriatrics Society and has been a VA physician-investigator for more than 35 years. He is presently the chief of the Geriatrics Division and director of the Landon Center on Aging.

He graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, received his internal medicine training at Barnes Hospital, and completed a research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health and a clinical fellowship in geriatrics at the University of Michigan School of Medicine.

Dr. Troen is an avid snow skier and tennis player, and he enjoys high-intensity interval fitness training.
