About Bryan G Vopat

Dr. Bryan Vopat is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports-related injuries. He is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related conditions, with a specialty in the care of sports-related injuries of the foot, ankle, knee and shoulder. He is a team physician for the Kansas City Chiefs and serves as a consultant for The University of Kansas athletics. He is also the orthopedic team physician for multiple Kansas City area high schools. Dr. Vopat cares for patients of all ages and cares for each patient with an individualized approach, focusing on the goal of returning patients to the level of activity they desire and helping patients live an active lifestyle.

Dr. Vopat’s interests include leading groundbreaking sports medicine research. He has published over 100 articles, has over 220 national presentations, sits on several national committees and currently has multiple ongoing grants for clinical research. He has established a clinical research program that allows The University of Kansas Health System to advance orthopedic care. Dr. Vopat brings this leading-edge research to his clinical approach, which provides his patients the most advanced care available. Throughout his career, he has been involved in research that includes ankle instability, effects of injuries on NFL players careers, ACL reconstruction, psychological impact on sports, cartilage restoration in the knee and ankle, among many other topics. His current research interests include safely returning patients back to sport after injuries and studying sex differences to improve female outcomes.

After injuring his own ACL in high school, Dr. Vopat learned how sports medicine doctors help patients get back to their active lives. He was inspired to help patients fulfill their potential when returning from an injury. His clinical focus includes sports medicine and pediatric sports medicine, knee injuries, shoulder injuries, foot and ankle injuries, and arthroscopic surgery. He decided to specialize further in foot and ankle injuries after noticing that many doctors focus on the knee but don’t go lower. Because athletes are on their feet constantly, it’s important that medical professionals understand how the entire lower body works together. He tries to view the knee, ankle and foot as one unit. He loves helping active people get back to their desired activity levels. They can be anyone from a professional athlete to a weekend warrior to a high school athlete. He works to help them achieve their personal goals and get back to their way of life.

Dr. Vopat attended The University of Kansas for his undergraduate and medical school education. He then moved to the East Coast, where he completed his orthopedic surgery residency and a trauma fellowship at the Warren Alpert School of Medicine at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. To further develop his athletic specialization, Dr. Vopat completed a sports medicine fellowship through Harvard Medical School at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. There he helped take care of the New England Revolution, Boston Bruins, Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots during their 2015 Super Bowl season. He followed this with a foot and ankle fellowship, which he completed in July 2016 through Harvard Medical School at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr Vopat’s commonly treated conditions and procedures performed are:

Knee: ACL injuries, multiligament knee injuries, meniscus tears, patella instability, osteotomies and cartilage restoration

Foot and ankle: ankle fractures, ankle instability, cartilage restoration, peroneal tendon tears, osteochondral lesions, lis franc injuries, jones fractures and many other conditions
