Erik S Henkelman, MD

Dr. Erik Henkelman is a sports medicine surgeon, specializing in conditions of the shoulder and knee. He is an assistant team physician at the University of Kansas and an assistant professor in the Orthopedic Surgery Department at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He cares for athletes of all ages and believes in a comprehensive approach to patient care. He explores all alternatives before surgery is considered. Regardless of whether the decision is made to proceed with surgery, he and his team continue to manage care of the patient through full recovery.

He performs open and arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle. His commonly treated conditions and procedures performed are as follows.
• Shoulder: Rotator cuff injuries, labrum tears, chronic bicep pain, impingement, AC joint instability, clavicle fractures, arthritis and shoulder replacement
• Knee: ACL injuries, multiligament knee injuries, meniscus tears, patella instability, patella fractures, patella tendon tears, quadriceps tendon tears, osteotomies and cartilage restoration
• Ankle: Achilles tendon tears, ankle instability, ankle impingement and fractures

Dr. Henkelman earned his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Boston University Medical Center. Following residency, he completed an orthopedic surgery sports medicine fellowship at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he served as an assistant team physician for the Kansas City Royals, University of Kansas Athletics and Mill Valley High School. In fellowship, he received subspecialized orthopedic training in surgical and nonsurgical management of conditions of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, foot and ankle with a concentration in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery.

Born and raised outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he has a longstanding passion for sports. As an undergraduate at Duke University, he was a 4-year letter winner on the men’s lacrosse team while completing a dual major in biomedical and mechanical engineering.
