Julian Diaz Abele, MD

Dr. Julian Diaz-Abele is a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with subspecialty training in microvascular reconstruction, super-microsurgical lymphatic surgery, and adult craniomaxillofacial reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. His practice focuses on complex adult reconstruction of the breast, head and neck, skull and trunk, with emphasis on cases that benefit from free tissue transfer.

He welcomes care and consultations for conditions including immediate and delayed breast reconstruction – implant-based and autologous (flap/tissue “transplant,” also known as DIEP); oncoplastic reconstruction after lumpectomy or mastectomy; revision of prior breast reconstruction; post-ablative reconstruction after head and neck cancer, including free flap reconstruction of the oral cavity, mandible, maxilla and scalp; complex skin cancer reconstruction of the face and scalp; post-traumatic facial and skull reconstruction after motor vehicle collisions, ballistic injuries, complex facial fractures, etc.; cranioplasty for skull defects and skull tumors; reconstruction of dental and jaw tumors (ameloblastoma); adult craniofacial deformities (hemifacial microsomia); lymphovenous anastomosis (LVA) and vascularized lymph node transfer (VLNT) for lymphedema of the upper or lower extremity; immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR) at the time of axillary or inguinal node dissection for lymphedema prevention; and facial aesthetic surgery.

Dr. Diaz-Abele earned his medical degree from McGill University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, followed by plastic surgery residency at the University of Manitoba – a program recognized for its leadership in microvascular surgery. He then completed 2 subspecialty fellowships: reconstructive microsurgery at the University of Kansas Medical Center (head and neck, breast and trunk microsurgical reconstruction and super-microsurgical lymphatic reconstruction), and adult craniofacial reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at the University of Toronto (craniofacial trauma, post-oncologic craniofacial reconstruction, cranioplasty and facial aesthetic surgery).
