Larry R Corum, MD

Dr. Larry R. Corum is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine with subcertifications in hematology and medical oncology. He has broad experience in medical oncology and hematology, spanning more than 20 years.

Upon his initial meeting with patients, Dr. Corum works with them to develop a plan for treatment and inspire hope. “Patients experiencing a cancer diagnosis are facing the most daunting challenge of their lives,” says Dr. Corum. “Nearly everything else falls away at that moment. They need an experienced cancer clinician who can walk them through the thorny landscape and explain options and opportunities. Before I meet my patient, we are allies ̶ because we have a common enemy.

“So much is taking place to change the landscape in oncology and how we approach cancer,” he continues. “Immunotherapy, biologic therapy, molecularly targeted therapy ̶ these advancements allow people to feel better, function better and make more of an impact on their cancer than anything we’ve used in the past.

“Our ever-growing understanding of the molecular biology that drives a particular cancer has, in many cases, allowed for the development and application of targeted treatments, which are typically more effective and less toxic than traditional chemotherapy. These new therapies ̶ such as oral targeted drugs, antibody-drug conjugates and various forms of immunotherapy ̶ are radically changing treatment, prolonging survival and, in many cases, resulting in cure.”

Dr. Corum graduated first in his medical school class at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He secured a hematology-oncology fellowship at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, to complete his specialty training.

He returned to his native Kansas City in 2004. Dr. Corum’s current practice focuses primarily on the treatment of breast cancer and lung cancer. He is the clinical trials site principal investigator, and the medical oncology section lead at The University of Kansas Cancer Center in Olathe. He helped establish the multidisciplinary breast cancer clinic at Olathe and has multiple publications in the field of breast cancer and lung cancer.

Dr. Corum was instrumental in the planning and development of the Olathe Health Cancer Center, which opened on the Olathe campus in 2018. This expanded the influence and reputation of the Olathe oncology team and brought increased clinical research and clinical trials to cancer patients in the region.

In 2023, Olathe Medical Center became part of The University of Kansas Health System and the cancer center at Olathe was folded into The University of Kansas Cancer Center – one of the nation’s leading cancer centers.
