About Matthew L Drake

Dr. Matthew Drake is an orthopedic hand and upper extremity surgeon. Dr. Drake has an interest in diverse conditions of the upper extremities. He cares for injuries such as fractures, dislocations and lacerations. He also has an interest in peripheral nerve surgery ranging from common problems, such as carpal and cubital tunnel syndrome as well as complex nerve repair and reconstruction. He cares for common conditions such as trigger digits, finger and wrist arthritis, tendonitis and ganglion cysts.

He specializes in performing many procedures using a technique known as “wide awake” hand surgery. This technique allows patients to undergo surgery without the need for any general anesthesia or tourniquet, which can result in less postoperative pain, less time off work and no side effects from anesthesia.

Dr. Drake obtained his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University and completed his orthopedic residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. He completed a fellowship in hand surgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has a subcertification in hand surgery. Prior to joining The University of Kansas Health System, Dr. Drake was an active duty U.S. Army hand surgeon with 14 years’ experience. He was stationed at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where he cared for war-injured service members with complex problems. He also completed 2 tours of duty to the Middle East caring for deployed service members.

Originally from Leavenworth, Kansas, Dr. Drake strives to provide the highest quality care to his patients through shared decision making and using best available current techniques and medical knowledge.
