Matthew T De Ruyter, MD

Dr. Matthew De Ruyter is an adult reconstruction orthopedic surgeon specializing in primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty (surgery to relieve pain and restore function). He treats and manages a broad spectrum of conditions, including osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, fractures, post-traumatic arthritis, instability and complex revision procedures following prior joint replacement surgeries.

Dr. De Ruyter has a strong clinical interest in outpatient joint replacement and plays an active role in developing outpatient joint programs aimed at helping patients recover safely and comfortably at home following surgery. He is also committed to advancing surgical innovation through the use of robotic-assisted techniques and AI-driven technologies to enhance precision and patient outcomes. His practice reflects a dedication to remaining at the forefront of evolving arthroplasty care.

Patient-centered care is central to Dr. De Ruyter’s philosophy. His goal is to restore mobility and function so patients can return to the activities they enjoy, from daily walks to high-demand recreational pursuits. He recognizes the significant impact joint disease can have on quality of life and is dedicated to helping patients achieve meaningful, lasting improvement.

A Kansas City native, Dr. De Ruyter completed his secondary education at Rockhurst High School before earning his undergraduate degree from the University of Oklahoma. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. He further advanced his training through an adult reconstruction fellowship at the University of California, Davis. Dr. De Ruyter was proud to return to The University of Kansas Health System to begin his practice focused on hip and knee replacement surgery.

Outside of medicine, Dr. De Ruyter enjoys spending time with his dogs, trail running, snowboarding, exploring mountainous regions and watching football.
