About Melissa E Huggins

Dr. Melissa Huggins is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She completed a fellowship at Ostergard Female Urology & Gynecology Partnership. She earned her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine and completed her residency at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center. Having the ability to empower women to improve their quality of life is what directed her path to the subspecialty of urogynecology. As the daughter of a teacher and a surgeon, she is motivated to provide the education and surgical expertise to guide patients to select their personalized treatment plan. Whether the plan is conservative (without surgery) or involves a minimally invasive operation, her approach is patient-driven.

Initially in her obstetrics and gynecology residency, she thought she would pursue the subspecialty of gynecologic oncology. However, her career path changed after spending a fellowship month at MD Anderson Cancer Center. There, she cared for women whose cancer treatments left them with urinary and bowel outcomes that were inoperable and created devastating quality-of-life challenges (such as urinary and fecal incontinence). Ultimately, she found that it is more inspiring for her to improve these quality-of-life issues for patients.
