Mohammed Q Al-Sabbagh, MD

Dr. Mohammed Q. Al-Sabbagh is a board-certified neurologist specializing in vascular neurology, the diagnosis and treatment of stroke and other disorders affecting the blood vessels of the brain, and hospital-based neurological care. He provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for adults hospitalized with neurological disorders, including stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases, neurological emergencies, and neurological complications of complex medical illnesses.

Dr. Al-Sabbagh enjoys caring for patients with challenging neurological conditions that require careful clinical reasoning and close collaboration among multiple specialists. His clinical interests include stroke and other cerebrovascular disorders, neurological emergencies and the neurological manifestations of systemic illnesses, including infections, autoimmune diseases, metabolic disorders and critical illness.

Whether caring for a patient with an acute stroke, an unexplained neurological illness or a complex medical condition affecting the nervous system, Dr. Al-Sabbagh's goal is to provide thoughtful, compassionate and individualized care while helping patients and their families understand every step of their hospitalization. He believes the best neurological care begins with listening carefully to each patient and understanding the whole person, not just the diagnosis. As a neurohospitalist, Dr. Al-Sabbagh cares for patients whose neurological conditions are often closely connected to other medical illnesses. He believes the best outcomes come from a multidisciplinary approach, working closely with physicians across specialties, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, case managers and patients' families to ensure every aspect of a patient's health is considered. He also strives to practice high-value, patient-centered medicine. Whenever possible, he aims to answer important clinical questions through thoughtful evaluation before relying on unnecessary tests, procedures or treatments.

By focusing on what is most likely to benefit each patient, he hopes to provide care that is both effective and mindful of the physical and emotional burden that hospitalization can place on patients and their loved ones.

Dr. Al-Sabbagh has a particular interest in understanding the complex relationship between the brain and the rest of the body, including how systemic illnesses affect neurological function and how neurological disorders influence overall health, recovery and quality of life. Just as important as making the correct diagnosis is helping patients and their families understand what is happening, answering their questions and guiding them through difficult medical decisions with clarity, compassion and honesty.

Dr. Al-Sabbagh earned his medical degree from the University of Jordan School of Medicine, graduating first in his medical school class. After completing his medical internship, he pursued his neurology residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he served as academic and educational chief resident during his final year and received multiple resident teaching awards in recognition of his commitment to medical education and mentorship. He then completed advanced fellowship training in vascular neurology at Washington University in St. Louis.

Much of Dr. Al-Sabbagh's early clinical training took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he cared for critically ill patients with complex neurological complications. That experience strengthened his interest in the intersection of neurological and systemic diseases and inspired his commitment to caring for hospitalized patients with medically complex conditions.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Al-Sabbagh serves as a clinical assistant professor of neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He remains actively involved in clinical research focused on stroke prevention, cerebrovascular disease and improving outcomes for patients with neurological disorders, and he has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications.

He is also passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of physicians, believing that education, research and patient care are inseparable in advancing the field of neurology.
